Royal Navy to Construct Drone-Equipped Warships, Sidestepping Destroyer Replacements
The Royal Navy is set to develop and procure new warships equipped with uncrewed aerial and underwater vehicles, a policy outlined in the forthcoming defence investment plan. This move represents a notable departure from simply replacing the existing fleet of six Type 45 destroyers and 11 Type 23 frigates.
Ministers have asserted that this approach will deliver a more modern and effective naval force, better suited to contemporary maritime threats. Instead of direct replacements, the focus will be on integrating advanced drone technology to enhance surveillance, reconnaissance, and strike capabilities.
Critics argue this strategy might leave the UK with a diminished conventional naval presence, particularly given the ongoing operational demands on the current fleet. Questions remain about the timeline for these new vessels and how the transition will maintain defence readiness.
