Russian Missile Barrage Hits Kyiv, Killing One Civilian Amid New Year Attacks
A series of Russian missile attacks struck Kyiv, causing at least one civilian death, just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cautioned about Moscow's preparations for a "massive" offensive. Debris from intercepted missiles caused significant damage across the capital.
Kyiv's Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed the fatality, stating that the victim was killed in the Solomyanskyi district. Explosions were reported in multiple areas of the city, including the Pecherskyi and Dniprovskyi districts, where infrastructure was damaged and fires erupted. The attacks also affected a warehouse in the Podilskyi district and residential buildings.
Ukraine's air force reported that Russia launched 16 missiles overnight. This latest barrage occurred shortly after President Zelensky issued a direct warning to Russian citizens, alleging that Moscow was planning a large-scale drone and missile assault. He stated that Russia was "afraid" and was attempting to sow fear through such actions.
The Kyiv city military administration confirmed that air defence systems were actively engaged in repelling the attacks. Emergency services responded to several locations to address fires and assist those affected. This continues a pattern of Russian forces targeting Ukrainian cities with missile and drone strikes, particularly over significant dates and holidays.
