Sara Payne Details Daughter Sarah's Murder Discovery, Recalls Media Reporting Her Death
Sara Payne has described the grim realisation that her eight-year-old daughter, Sarah, had been murdered, explaining that the tragic news was concurrently being broadcast by media outlets. Payne emphasised her resolve not to permit Roy Whiting, convicted of Sarah's killing, to occupy her mental space.
Sarah Payne disappeared in July 2000 in West Sussex. Her body was discovered 16 days later in a field in West Sussex. Roy Whiting was subsequently convicted of her murder in December 2001 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He had a prior conviction for kidnapping and indecently assaulting a nine-year-old girl in 1995.
Payne recounted the intense media scrutiny following Sarah's disappearance, which significantly complicated the family's private grieving process. She noted that the media landscape has since evolved, with regulations now prohibiting the naming of child victims without family consent until formal identification. Payne has become a prominent advocate for child safety, campaigning for 'Sarah's Law', which allows parents to check if individuals with access to their children have prior convictions for sex offences.
