Search for George Smyth in Romania Concludes with Discovery of Body

Romanian authorities have confirmed the discovery of a body believed to be that of George Smyth, a 22-year-old British student. Mr Smyth, from Edinburgh, had been reported missing since 21 October after embarking on a solo hike in the Făgăraș Mountains, a rugged and often treacherous region.

The search operation, involving local mountain rescue teams, police, and gendarmerie, focused on the area around Lake Bâlea. Mr Smyth’s last known contact was a video call with his girlfriend, during which he indicated he was navigating challenging weather conditions and dense fog. His car was later found parked at the Bâlea Lac chalet.

Concerns for Mr Smyth's safety intensified due to the increasingly severe autumnal weather in the high-altitude region. While formal identification is pending, the discovery brings a sombre conclusion to the days-long search effort in the notoriously difficult terrain.
