Shadow Home Secretary Philp Queries French Navy Firing Drill in English Channel
Shadow Home Secretary Tom Philp has announced his intention to query the French ambassador regarding a recent French naval firing exercise in the English Channel. The live-fire drill occurred approximately 50 nautical miles south of Eastbourne, East Sussex, in international waters that are also frequented by British fishing fleets.
Mr Philp stated he would seek clarification from the French embassy by next Monday. He highlighted concerns over the potential impact on fishing activities and maritime safety within a shared and busy waterway.
The French Ministry of Defence confirmed the exercise, describing it as a routine training operation conducted within established safety parameters. However, the timing and location of the drill have prompted scrutiny, particularly given the historical context of Anglo-French maritime interactions and resource interests in the Channel.
