Sinn F Sinn Féin Pledges Co-operation with Police Over Drumcree Protest Enquiry
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has stated the party will fully co-operate with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) investigation concerning recent protests on Garvaghy Road, Portadown. The commitment follows sustained demonstrations by residents opposed to a proposed march by the Portadown District Orange Lodge.
Protesters have maintained a presence on Garvaghy Road since last Sunday, leading to confrontations with police. These incidents have drawn sharp criticism from unionist political figures, who have called for decisive action against what they describe as illegal obstruction and public disorder. The PSNI has confirmed an active investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the protests.
The dispute over Orange Order parades in the area has been a recurring flashpoint, with residents asserting their right to protest against marches they view as provocative. This ongoing situation underscores the enduring complexities of sectarian divisions in Northern Ireland and the challenges faced by authorities in balancing protest rights with public order concerns.
