Sinn Féin Declares Stormont Executive 'Dysfunctional' as DUP Prioritises Protocol

Sinn Féin's Stormont leader, Michelle O'Neill, has declared the Executive to be "dysfunctional," stating, "the wheels are coming off." O'Neill's assessment follows the DUP's consistent refusal to participate in routine Executive meetings, citing their focus on addressing concerns related to the Northern Ireland Protocol. The DUP maintains that until the Protocol's implications for Northern Ireland are resolved, its participation in such meetings remains conditional.

During a plenary session, Ms O'Neill criticised the DUP for its prioritisation of the Protocol over other pressing matters affecting Northern Ireland's populace. She highlighted a series of recent governmental failures, including the delayed introduction of a three-year budget and the absence of a finalised cancer strategy. "The public is being failed," O'Neill stated, emphasising the Executive's inability to deliver essential services and strategic planning.

DUP First Minister Paul Givan, in response, reiterated his party's commitment to the people of Northern Ireland, while reaffirming their stance on the Protocol. He asserted that the DUP's efforts are concentrated on achieving a durable solution that addresses the economic and constitutional concerns raised by the post-Brexit arrangements. This ongoing political deadlock underscores the enduring challenges within Northern Ireland's power-sharing agreement, with the DUP's strategic obstructionism continuing to paralyse key governmental functions.
