South Africa Police Major-General Feroz Khan Survives Assassination Attempt Ahead of Corruption Inquiry
Major-General Feroz Khan, Deputy Head of South Africa's Crime Intelligence, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Pretoria earlier this week. His vehicle was struck by several bullets in what appears to be a targeted attack, occurring just days before his scheduled appearance before a crucial inquiry into police corruption.
The inquiry, known as the Zondo Commission, has been investigating widespread allegations of state capture and graft within various government departments, including the South African Police Service. Major-General Khan was expected to provide testimony regarded as significant to understanding the extent of illicit activities within the intelligence apparatus.
Police have initiated an investigation into the shooting, but no arrests have been made public. This incident underscores the perilous environment for whistleblowers and officials willing to expose corruption in South Africa, particularly within powerful state security organisations. Previous witnesses linked to corruption probes have faced intimidation and threats, highlighting the substantial risks involved in challenging established networks of illicit influence.
