South West Water Fined £7.9 Million for Thousands of Sewage Discharge Violations
South West Water has been handed a fine of £7.9 million for 16 environmental offences, encompassing thousands of illegal sewage discharges into rivers and the sea across Devon and Cornwall. The sentencing at Exeter Crown Court followed the company's guilty pleas to charges spanning from 2016 to 2020.
The Environment Agency's investigation uncovered approximately 6,973 illicit discharges over the four-year period. These incidents contributed to significant ecological damage, impacting bathing waters, shellfish fisheries, and protected conservation sites.
During the proceedings, Justice Johnson noted a "cavalier" approach to environmental regulations within the company. He highlighted that South West Water's repeated failures demonstrated a systemic disregard for its responsibilities, prioritising financial considerations over environmental compliance. This ruling marks one of the largest penalties ever issued for water pollution offences in the UK.
