Southern Water Imposes Hampshire and Isle of Wight Hosepipe Ban
Southern Water will implement a hosepipe ban for customers across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, commencing on Friday, 5 August. This decision mirrors similar restrictions recently imposed by South East Water, affecting residents in Sussex and Kent.
Water Restrictions Due to Dry Conditions
The temporary use ban prohibits the use of hosepipes for activities deemed non-essential, including watering gardens, cleaning private vehicles, and filling paddling pools. Southern Water stated the measure is a response to “one of the driest years on record” and “exceptionally high demand for water” across the region.
The company confirmed that the River Test, a crucial water source for the area, is experiencing significantly reduced flows. This depletion necessitates immediate action to conserve water supplies and protect environmental resources.
Failure to comply with the ban could result in prosecution and a court fine of up to £1,000. Exemptions apply for certain vulnerable individuals and businesses that rely on water for their operations, such as car washes and legitimate horticultural enterprises. Further details on exemptions and the scope of the ban are available on Southern Water's official channels.
