Starmer Government Considered Relocating from 10 Downing Street to More Suitable Premises
High-level discussions within Keir Starmer's government included seriously considering a relocation from the historic but increasingly impractical 10 Downing Street. The building, a symbol of British political power, has been criticised internally for its deteriorating state, being described as a "gloomy, mice-infested, bomb-curtained rabbit warren".
Sources indicate that officials weighed options for moving the Prime Minister's residence and offices to more appropriate premises. The current site, composed of three conjoined 17th-century townhouses, presents significant challenges for modern government operations, including substantial maintenance costs and inadequate space. These discussions reflect a growing acknowledgement that the iconic address is no longer fit for purpose, necessitating a move to a more functional and efficient environment.
