Stephen Simpson Pleads Guilty to Impersonating Doctor at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary
Stephen Simpson, 22, has pleaded guilty to charges of impersonating a medical student and doctor at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. He appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, where he admitted to wearing medical scrubs and NHS-branded clothing on multiple occasions between 25 March and 12 April 2024.
Simpson's deception allowed him to access clinical areas and staff changing rooms within the hospital, leading to concerns over security protocols and patient safety. The court heard he presented himself as a medical professional, interacting with staff under false pretences.
The incident has prompted calls for a thorough review of hospital access procedures, particularly regarding individuals posing as staff. Critics argue that such breaches highlight systemic vulnerabilities within the NHS, where resource constraints and a culture of trust may inadvertently facilitate such deceptions. The focus remains on how a person could repeatedly gain unauthorised access without immediate detection.
Sentencing has been deferred for background reports. The prosecution has yet to detail the full extent of Simpson's activities within the hospital, but his guilty plea confirms a significant security lapse at a critical public institution.
