Steven Long Jailed 15 Years For Orchestrating £11.5 Million Fraud Against 115 Elderly Victims
Steven Long, 58, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison at Leeds Crown Court for masterminding a large-scale fraud operation that targeted vulnerable elderly individuals. The scheme saw 115 victims conned out of a combined total exceeding £11.5 million.
Long's modus operandi involved presenting himself as a credible financial advisor, gaining the trust of his victims, and then persuading them to invest their life savings into non-existent or worthless ventures. The court heard how many of the victims were coerced into handing over significant portions of their pensions and inheritances, under the false pretence of securing their financial futures.
The proceeds of the fraud were channelled into funding Long's extravagant lifestyle. Evidence presented during the trial detailed purchases of multiple luxury properties, high-performance vehicles, and substantial spending on other non-essential items. Meanwhile, numerous victims were left facing considerable financial distress, with some losing their entire life savings and enduring profound emotional impact.
The investigation into Long's activities was protracted and complex, involving extensive financial analysis and victim testimonies. His conviction and subsequent lengthy sentence underscore the serious nature of organised fraud targeting the elderly, and the court's emphasis on deterrence for such exploitative crimes.
