Sutatausa Coal Mine Explosion Kills Nine Miners, Rescuers Extract Six
Nine people have been confirmed dead after an explosion at a coal mine in Sutatausa, north of Bogotá, Colombia. The blast, which occurred at 16:00 (21:00 GMT) on Monday, is suspected to have resulted from an accumulation of gases within the shafts.
Emergency workers managed to rescue six miners, who are currently receiving medical attention in hospital. Captain Álvaro Farfán of the regional fire department stated that efforts were ongoing to retrieve the bodies of those who perished.
Colombia's national mining agency revealed that it had issued a list of recommendations to the mine's operators following an inspection conducted less than a month prior. This inspection had specifically highlighted a "potentially dangerous gas build-up" within the facility, underscoring persistent safety concerns in the nation's mining sector.
Mining accidents remain a prevalent issue across Colombia, where many operations function informally with inadequate safety protocols. Sutatausa has been a long-standing coal-mining hub, with a significant portion of its population employed in the industry.
In July of the previous year, 18 workers were extricated from an unlicensed gold mine after an 18-hour entrapment due to mechanical failure. A particularly devastating incident also struck Sutatausa in 2023, claiming 21 lives in a methane gas explosion that ripped through a complex of coal mines in the area.
