Tanzanian Musician Matonya Charged with Rape in Kenya
Tanzanian musician Sefu Shabani, widely recognised as Matonya, has been formally charged with rape following his arrest in Mombasa, Kenya. The 43-year-old artist, known for his distinctive 'bongo flava' style, appeared in court where he vehemently denied the accusation.
Court Proceedings and Bail Conditions
According to a statement released by Kenya's Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the court granted Matonya bail set at 500,000 Kenyan shillings (approximately £2,900). A crucial condition of his release requires him to surrender his Tanzanian passport, ensuring he remains within the court's jurisdiction. Prosecutors allege the sexual assault occurred at an apartment in the beach resort of Nyali on Tuesday.
The DPP has expressed concern that the musician should remain within the court's reach and has instructed immigration authorities to issue an alert at all border points. Authorities in Tanzania have yet to comment on the ongoing legal proceedings.
Industry Reaction and Social Media Debate
Matonya, who rose to prominence approximately 15 years ago with hits such as 'Vaileti' and 'Anita', continues to perform across East Africa. The charges have sparked considerable debate across social media platforms and within Tanzania's music industry. While some voices advocate for support and due process for Matonya, others underscore the gravity of the allegations and the imperative for justice to be served.
