Teenager Charged After Record 110 Migrants Cross English Channel on Single Dinghy

Chan Mathok Atak, 19, has been charged with intentionally endangering the safety of a person at sea, contrary to Section 58 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995. The charges stem from an incident on 12 August when a dinghy carrying approximately 110 individuals landed at Lydd-on-Sea, Kent. Authorities confirmed this as the largest number of migrants ever recorded on a single small boat crossing the English Channel.

Atak, whose address was given as a hotel in Margate, Kent, appeared before Folkestone Magistrates' Court and was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear at Canterbury Crown Court on 16 September. The operation involved Border Force officials, Kent Police, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

The Channel crossings continue to pose significant challenges to the British government's policy, which prioritises deterrence and interception. Critics routinely point to the lack of safe and legal routes as a core driver behind these dangerous crossings, highlighting the human cost of current approaches.
