Doctors at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham have successfully performed a 12-hour conscious brain surgery on a teenager, thought to be among the youngest worldwide to undergo such a procedure for an arteriovenous malformation (AVM).
During the intricate operation, the patient remained awake, conversing with the surgical team. Surgeons posed questions to her to continuously assess her brain's functionality, ensuring vital areas were not compromised during the removal of the AVM, a tangle of abnormal blood vessels connecting arteries and veins in the brain.
The conscious procedure is critical for surgeries near eloquent areas of the brain, such as those controlling speech, movement, or sensation. Engaging the patient in real-time allows surgeons to map and preserve these functions, significantly reducing the risk of post-operative neurological deficits.
