Tennessee Governor Halts Christa Pike Execution One Hour Before Scheduled Lethal Injection

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee issued a last-minute reprieve for Christa Pike, preventing her execution barely an hour before she was due to receive a lethal injection. Pike, 47, is the sole woman on death row within the state of Tennessee, having been convicted and sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder of her roommate, Colleen Slemmer.

The stay of execution postpones the scheduled punishment, which was set to proceed at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Pike's case has drawn considerable attention since her conviction for the torture and killing of Slemmer, a crime committed when both were teenagers at a Job Corps training programme.

This intervention by Governor Lee provides a temporary halt to the process, though the underlying conviction and sentence remain. The decision arrives as legal challenges and appeals in capital cases often continue until the final moments before an execution is carried out.
