Thames Water Awards Finance Chief Steve Buck £1 Million Signing-On Fee
Thames Water, facing significant financial strain and public scrutiny, awarded its new Chief Financial Officer, Steve Buck, a £1 million signing-on fee upon his appointment in May 2023. This payment was a component of a broader remuneration deal designed to secure his expertise amidst the company's precarious financial position.
The utility firm, which supplies water and wastewater services to 15 million customers across London and the Thames Valley, has accumulated a substantial debt of £18.3 billion. This debt burden has prompted concerns regarding its long-term viability and its capacity to fund essential infrastructure upgrades.
Buck's appointment followed a period of instability within the company's leadership, including the departure of former chief executive Sarah Bentley. The decision to offer a seven-figure signing bonus comes as Thames Water seeks to raise £750 million from shareholders to address its financial challenges, a sum initially promised last summer but subsequently delayed.
The company maintains that the compensation package for Mr Buck, alongside other executive appointments, is competitive and necessary to attract individuals with the requisite skills to navigate its complex financial and operational landscape. However, the substantial payment is likely to draw further criticism from consumer advocates and politicians, particularly given the utility's performance issues, including sewage pollution incidents and hosepipe bans, and its reliance on shareholder injections.
