Tibet Earthquake Claims 16 Lives in Remote Qinghai Province as Rescue Efforts Continue
A severe earthquake struck a remote, mountainous area of Qinghai province in Tibet, leading to the confirmed deaths of 16 people. The seismic event, which registered a magnitude of 6.9, occurred at approximately 01:45 local time.
The epicentre was located at a shallow depth of 10km (6 miles), intensifying its impact on the region. Initial reports indicate widespread structural damage, with over 130 houses collapsing and an additional 200 sustaining severe damage across various villages. The affected area is known for its high altitude and challenging terrain, which complicates ongoing rescue and recovery efforts.
