Top Democrats Demand Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner Withdraw Over Sexual Assault Allegation
Prominent Democrats, including the Senate Majority Leader and the party's campaign arm chief, have publicly called for Maine Senate hopeful Graham Platner to withdraw from the upcoming election. This demand follows an allegation of sexual assault, which Mr Platner has vehemently denied.
The accusation, which emerged recently, has prompted a swift and unified response from party leadership, keen to avoid any scandal that could jeopardise their electoral prospects. A spokesperson for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) stated that Mr Platner should "step aside" to allow the party to focus on the broader electoral contest.
Mr Platner, in a public statement, asserted the allegation was "categorically false". However, he also conveyed that he was "taking the time to reflect on the best path forward", suggesting a period of consideration regarding his candidacy. The pressure from within his own party underscores the immediate challenge faced by Mr Platner, as the Democrats aim to maintain a unified front ahead of critical elections.
