Trump Threatens Tariffs on Canada over Wildfire Smoke Affecting Northern US Cities
Donald Trump has warned of potential tariffs against Canada, citing persistent wildfire smoke affecting northern US cities. During a campaign event in Wisconsin, the former President asserted that Canada must "stop sending us their smoke," suggesting that a failure to do so would result in the imposition of trade barriers. This declaration follows previous threats made by Trump in 2023 regarding similar issues.
Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England and a UN Special Envoy for Climate Action, dismissed Trump's tariff threat as an attempt to divert attention from substantive climate policy. Carney emphasised that both the United States and Canada bear equal responsibility in addressing climate change. Scientists consistently link rising global temperatures and prolonged drought conditions to an increased frequency and intensity of wildfires across North America.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau previously stated that the US has offered assistance in combating the wildfires. However, Trump's latest remarks underscore a transactional approach to cross-border environmental issues, diverging significantly from established diplomatic and scientific consensus on climate change cooperation.
