Trump Threatens to Dismiss Federal Reserve Chair Powell Amid Interest Rate Standoff
Trump's Ultimatum to Powell
Former US President Donald Trump has declared he will 'have to fire' Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell if he does not vacate his position by 15th May, when his current term concludes. The two have been engaged in a protracted and public disagreement, with Trump consistently criticising Powell's reluctance to implement interest rate cuts, despite the former president's repeated demands.
Succession and Senate Confirmation Battles
Powell intends to remain in his role temporarily until his nominated successor, Kevin Warsh, receives Senate confirmation. However, this plan faces significant hurdles. Thom Tillis, a prominent Republican Senator on the committee overseeing Federal Reserve nominations, has threatened to obstruct Warsh's appointment. Tillis's opposition is contingent on the dropping of a criminal investigation into Powell concerning the renovation of the Federal Reserve building. Trump, while expressing hope for Tillis to relent, stated he is unwilling to halt the probe, insisting on understanding the expenditure on the building project, which he claims was vastly inflated.
Precedent and Past Tensions
Dismissing a Federal Reserve Chair would mark an unprecedented breach of convention, as no Chair has ever been removed from office in such a manner. This latest escalation follows previous instances where Trump has openly disparaged Powell, once labelling him a "knucklehead" and accusing him of a "lousy job" for not succumbing to pressure for rate cuts. Financial markets have previously reacted negatively to speculation of Powell's potential removal, highlighting the significant implications of such a move for economic stability.
