Uber Confirms 3,500 Redundancies as Global Workforce Undergoes Major Restructuring
Uber has announced the immediate redundancy of 3,500 staff members, primarily impacting its customer support and recruitment divisions. The decision, communicated internally, seeks to accelerate the company’s operational efficiency and adapt to evolving market conditions. These cuts represent a substantial portion of Uber’s global workforce, which stood at 27,000 employees before the announcement.
The company confirmed that the redundancies were driven by a broader restructuring initiative, with management stating a need for a “simpler and faster” operational model. This move follows a period of reduced demand for ride-hailing services, coupled with heightened scrutiny over gig economy labour practices and their financial viability.
Furthermore, Uber is reportedly divesting from several non-core ventures, including its nascent autonomous vehicle division, to concentrate resources on its primary ride-hailing and food delivery platforms. This strategic recalibration underscores a broader trend among technology firms to consolidate operations and secure profitability in an increasingly uncertain economic landscape.
