Ugandan Journalist Kijanangoma Set for Coronation Following Succession Dispute

Solomon Gafabusa Iguru Kijanangoma is scheduled for coronation as king of the Tooro kingdom in western Uganda. This event marks the culmination of a bitter succession dispute within the royal family, which has simmered for years.

Kijanangoma’s path to the throne has been contested by supporters of a younger claimant, whom the established royal clan has consistently refused to recognise. This faction argues that Kijanangoma is the legitimate successor, citing customary practices and a lineage that they assert is beyond dispute.

The Tooro kingdom, one of Uganda's traditional monarchies, holds significant cultural and symbolic weight, even though its rulers no longer wield executive political power. The dispute underscores the persistent complexities of traditional leadership structures in modern African states, often intersecting with national governance and material interests.
