Ugandan Opposition Lawyer Erias Lukwago Charged With Treason-Related Offence in Kampala
Erias Lukwago, a former mayor and legal representative for Kizza Besigye, a prominent opposition figure currently on trial for treason, now faces a treason-related charge himself. Mr Lukwago, who appeared visibly unwell, denied the charge of failing to report treason and has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
His apprehension earlier this week drew criticism, particularly after General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda's military chief and the President's son, publicly gloated about the arrest on social media. Opposition politician Bobi Wine, who left Uganda following the January presidential election, alleged that Mr Lukwago was detained on General Kainerugaba's orders while preparing to serve a court summons on the military chief.
General Kainerugaba, known for his contentious online activity, shared images purportedly showing Mr Lukwago blindfolded in an undisclosed location. In another post, he stated, "I'm proud of all the hurt and pain I will inflict on the criminal Lukwago!" The General has a history of making provocative posts, some of which have been subsequently removed, and has previously boasted of abducting and torturing opposition figures.
Mr Lukwago represents Kizza Besigye, who has been held on treason charges since his forcible rendition from Kenya to Uganda in late 2024. Mr Besigye is a long-standing political rival of President Yoweri Museveni, having served as his personal physician before their split in 1999, and has faced multiple detentions during his electoral challenges against the incumbent.
