UK Consumer Price Index Falls to 7.9% in June, Analysts Forecast Further Rises
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) annual inflation rate in the UK registered a fall to 7.9% in June, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics. This marks a decrease from the 8.7% recorded in May, presenting a marginal easing of pressure on households.
The primary driver behind this deceleration was a reduction in petrol prices, alongside a slight cooling in food inflation. However, economists are largely in agreement that this downward trend is likely to be temporary. Forecasts suggest a resurgence in the inflation rate for July, predominantly attributed to recent increases in fuel prices at the pump.
This latest figure, while lower than anticipated, still keeps inflation significantly above the Bank of England's 2% target. The Bank's Monetary Policy Committee faces ongoing pressure to address persistent price instability, with further interest rate adjustments widely expected.
