UK Expects Record May Temperature as South East Forecasts 34C Peak
The United Kingdom is poised for its warmest May day on record this week, as meteorologists predict temperatures could climb to 34C in isolated areas of the South East of England.
This comes after eight distinct regions across England officially entered heatwave conditions on Sunday, registering three consecutive days of temperatures surpassing specified thresholds. The previous May record, set on 27 May 2012, stands at 32.8C.
Public Health England has issued a Level 2 heat-health alert for large swathes of the country, emphasising the potential health risks for vulnerable individuals. The alert urges the public to remain hydrated, seek shade during peak sunlight hours, and check on those particularly susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
Meteorological Office analyses indicate that warm air currents originating from continental Europe are driving the current conditions. While temperatures are expected to remain elevated for several days, a gradual cooling trend is anticipated towards the weekend, with an increased likelihood of localised thunderstorms.
