Ukrainian Nationals Jailed for Arson Attacks Linked to Prime Minister Starmer
Roman Lavrynovych, 22, a Ukrainian national, received a seven-year sentence, while Stanislav Carpiuc, 27, a Ukrainian-born Romanian national, was sentenced to two years at the Old Bailey. These attacks were conducted on behalf of Russia, according to court revelations.
Lavrynovych carried out the arsons after being recruited by a Russian-speaking Telegram user known as "El Money," who promised payment. He had previously been engaged by the same unidentified figure to display far-right posters.
Mr. Justice Garnham, the presiding judge, characterised Lavrynovych as a "useful idiot," easily manipulated and "easily bought," who "accepted the job as you had accepted other grubby little tasks." Carpiuc's role was described as "supporting" in the "utterly reckless" attacks.
The court heard that a Toyota vehicle, previously owned by Sir Keir Starmer, was set alight in a north London street in May last year. Days later, two homes were targeted, including one rented by the prime minister's sister-in-law, which he still owned.
The two men were found guilty on Monday. Lavrynovych was also convicted of damaging property by fire, being reckless as to whether life was endangered, though acquitted of intent to endanger life. A third man, Petro Pochynok, 35, was acquitted of the conspiracy charge.
Following the arson, "El Money" contacted Lavrynovych on 12 May, offering cryptocurrency and instructing him to dispose of his clothing and leave London. Lavrynovych was arrested hours later at his Sydenham residence. Carpiuc was apprehended on 17 May at Luton Airport while attempting to board a flight to Romania.
James Scobie KC, representing Lavrynovych, stated his client was a "complete and utter foot soldier" and "fodder for this type of infiltration," expressing remorse for the "shame he has brought on the family in Ukraine." Evidence presented suggested "El Money" had indicated that merely damaging the front door was sufficient, provided it generated media coverage.
