Universal United Kingdom Resort Secures £1.3 Billion Government Funding for Bedfordshire Theme Park
Comcast NBCUniversal intends to invest £5 billion in the construction of the resort in Kempston Hardwick, Bedfordshire, with an additional £1 billion allocated over its initial decade of operation. The government's financial contribution is designated for local infrastructure and transport enhancements, facilitating access for both domestic and international visitors.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves visited the site, where preliminary preparation works are already underway, stating that the investment is expected to "unlock nearly £50 billion of economic growth" and generate thousands of employment opportunities. She emphasised that the government's investment in transport and infrastructure would benefit local residents, improving connectivity and attracting millions of global visitors.
Specific projects funded by the government's investment include upgrades to Wixams station, creating a four-platform stop, and improvements to the A421, with an estimated cost of £474 million. Wixams station serves as the closest Thameslink line access point to the resort, alongside a planned East West Rail station at Stewartby, anticipated to open in the early 2030s.
Over 100 individuals are currently employed on the project, with Universal promising 20,000 jobs during the construction phase. Upon the attraction's opening, an additional 8,000 jobs are expected, with approximately 80% allocated to residents from Bedfordshire and surrounding areas.
Mark Woodbury, Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, affirmed that the new resort would create numerous opportunities for the region. The 268-hectare site could feature Europe's tallest rides, alongside a free-to-access entertainment and retail district and a year-round theme park operating into the late evening. Comcast NBCUniversal aims to achieve 12 million annual visitors within 20 years, positioning it among the world's most popular parks. While specific ride themes remain unconfirmed, Woodbury has pledged "immersive storytelling, thrilling attractions and unparalleled creativity and innovation to the UK."
