US Congressman Eric Swalwell to Resign Amidst Sexual Misconduct Allegations
US Congressman Eric Swalwell is set to resign from his position in the House of Representatives, citing a need to take responsibility for past "mistakes in judgement" and to prevent further distraction from his duties. This announcement follows his recent withdrawal from the California governor's race amidst mounting pressure over sexual misconduct allegations from four women.
Ethics Inquiry and Denials
Swalwell, who has consistently denied the allegations, including sexual harassment and rape, stated in a letter posted on X: "I will fight the serious, false allegation made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make." The House ethics committee has launched an inquiry into his conduct, and prosecutors in Manhattan have also opened a probe.
Concurrent Resignation
In a related development, Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales of Texas also declared his intention to retire from office. Gonzales had previously admitted to an affair with an aide, which led to an ethics inquiry and his decision not to seek re-election. The two resignations occur as Congress returns from recess, with both ethics inquiries slated for review.
Impact on California Governor's Race
Swalwell's departure, though his name will remain on primary ballots, leaves a gap in the crowded Democratic field for the California gubernatorial race. Concerns remain that the Democratic vote could be split, potentially allowing two Republican candidates to advance to the general election in November, a scenario that would be highly disadvantageous for the state's dominant Democratic Party.
