US Embassy Alleges Canadian Election Interference; Ottawa Rejects Meddling Claim
The United States embassy in Ottawa has levelled accusations against Canada, alleging interference in the upcoming US midterm elections. This represents a rare public diplomatic spat between the two historically close Western allies.
Prime Minister Mark Carney swiftly rejected the claims, characterising them as baseless. He pointed out that the United States itself initiated trade actions against Canada, including tariffs on steel and aluminium, which he implied were the root cause of any perceived bilateral tensions, rather than Canadian electoral meddling.
This development unfolds against a backdrop of increasing trade disputes and diverging policy interests between the two nations, suggesting that the United States' long-standing strategy of maintaining client states, particularly for resource and strategic alignment, is not immune to public friction even among its closest partners.
