Uttlesford Council Orders Halt to Unauthorised Traveller Site Construction in Willows Green
Uttlesford District Council has ordered an immediate cessation of construction work on an alleged unauthorised traveller site located in Willows Green, near Felsted, Essex. The temporary stop notice mandates that all activity on the site must cease from Wednesday, with the order remaining in effect until 30 June.
Construction reportedly commenced on the land within hours of the council's offices closing for the May Day Bank Holiday weekend on Friday. Local residents observed lorries delivering substantial materials, including fencing and septic tanks, after sundown that evening.
A spokesperson for the landowner stated that construction had been halted and expressed a desire to comply with the council's directive, despite the authority receiving allegations that work continued beyond the stipulated deadline. The council confirmed awareness of these reports, emphasising that carrying out work in contravention of a temporary stop notice constitutes a criminal offence, punishable by an unlimited fine upon conviction.
Former Home Secretary James Cleverly, the Conservative MP for the area, accused the travellers of "gaming the system." However, Sherrie Smith, founder of Gypsy and Travellers Essex, highlighted that individuals often resort to constructing plots unlawfully and subsequently seeking retrospective planning permission due to perceived lack of alternative options. Council documents from December indicated a requirement for 35 traveller pitches across the district.
The council has stated it is actively gathering evidence and considering further enforcement actions, reassuring the community of its commitment to pursuing all appropriate measures within its statutory powers. Essex Police have been contacted for comment.
