Vietnamese Police Dismantle Feline Theft Ring, 400 Cats Rescued from Slaughter
Vietnamese police have dismantled a criminal enterprise responsible for stealing and collecting cats, leading to the rescue of more than 400 live animals. Nine suspects were arrested in connection with the operation, which reportedly trafficked cats for slaughter.
Police Raids Uncover Extensive Theft Network
Raids conducted in Tay Ninh Province and Ho Chi Minh City last week uncovered over 400 live cats and approximately 80 deceased animals preserved on ice. A further 21 cats were seized from a separate holding facility. Investigations by Ho Chi Minh City police traced the group after a series of pet thefts were reported in the area.
Suspects admitted to trapping and collecting cats across southern Vietnam over a three-year period. Investigators detailed that stolen cats were transported to holding facilities before being sold to traders every two to three days.
Welfare Concerns and Ongoing Investigation
While the consumption of dog and cat meat remains legal in Vietnam, vendors are required to possess permits confirming the animals' origin. Humane World for Animals stated that around 40 rescued cats have been reunited with their owners, though some animals succumbed to their ordeal.
The organisation is providing food and supplies for the animals remaining in police custody as evidence. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have encouraged residents whose pets have been stolen to assist in identifying the recovered animals. Estimates suggest around one million cats are stolen and slaughtered for meat annually in Vietnam, often taken from homes using snares or other methods.
