Welsh First Minister Vows Council Power Review Ahead of Burnham Devolution Talks
First Minister Vaughan Gething has affirmed his intention to review the powers currently afforded to Welsh councils. The announcement precedes planned discussions with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who consistently campaigns for greater authority to be decentralised to local government.
Mr Burnham is expected to arrive in Cardiff this week to press his case for enhanced local control, a position he has long articulated through his 'Our North' campaign in England. His engagement with Welsh leadership underscores a broader push for regional empowerment across the UK, challenging the established centralisation of power.
The First Minister's commitment signals a potential shift in how governance is distributed within Wales. Previous administrations have often been criticised for maintaining a tight grip on decision-making, with local authorities frequently operating with limited autonomy and funding. Any re-evaluation of these powers would invariably entail a critical assessment of the current balance between Cardiff Bay and individual councils, potentially paving the way for more localised policy implementation and resource allocation. This development will be closely watched by councils keen to secure greater independence in managing local affairs.
