Welsh Liberal Democrats Unveil Senedd Election Manifesto
Welsh Liberal Democrats Outline Election Priorities
The Welsh Liberal Democrats today unveiled their manifesto for the forthcoming Senedd election, with party leader Jane Dodds emphasising a commitment to bolstering public services and preserving Wales' place within the United Kingdom. Key pledges include a substantial £300m investment in social care to safeguard the NHS, alongside expanded childcare support.
A core tenet of the manifesto is a staunch opposition to Welsh independence, with Dodds vowing that "not a penny" of public funds will be allocated towards any such initiatives. This position could prove a significant point of contention in potential post-election negotiations, particularly with parties like Plaid Cymru, who advocate for establishing a national committee to explore independence.
Key Policy Commitments
Among the party's flagship proposals is a comprehensive universal childcare package, offering 30 hours per week for 48 weeks a year, for all children aged nine months to four years. Environmental concerns also feature prominently, with promises to clean up Wales' rivers and seas through increased funding for Natural Resources Wales and a ban on bonuses for water company executives until sewage discharges are eradicated.
Despite currently holding only one seat in the Senedd, Jane Dodds has previously played a pivotal role in budget negotiations with the Welsh government, securing measures such as a greyhound racing ban and discount bus travel. The party harbours ambitions to significantly increase its representation, aiming for five seats – enough to form an official Senedd group.
