Welsh Pubs, Hotels, and Gyms to Receive 30% Business Rates Reduction From April

Pubs, hotels, and gyms across Wales are set to benefit from a 30% reduction in their business rates from April. This relief measure, designed to support the hospitality and leisure sectors, is capped at £110,000 per business.

Funding Mechanism

The Welsh Government will finance these cuts by adjusting the Empty Property Rate and increasing the Uniform Business Rate for the largest non-domestic properties. Currently, businesses can claim a 50% discount on empty properties for the first three months, followed by full rates. Under the new scheme, this 50% discount period will be reduced to one month, after which full rates will apply.

Furthermore, the Uniform Business Rate, which is applied to all non-domestic properties, will see an increase. However, this adjustment is specifically targeted, ensuring that only the largest businesses contribute to the funding of the hospitality and leisure sector relief.

Impact and Implementation

This policy shift follows similar relief schemes implemented in England and Scotland, although the Welsh Government's approach includes a mechanism to offset the costs within the business rates system itself. The move aims to provide targeted support to sectors deemed crucial for local economies, while also ensuring fiscal responsibility through internal funding adjustments rather than relying on broader government allocations.
