WhatsApp Introduces Username System for Global Account Identification
WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging service, is set to introduce a new username feature, fundamentally altering how users connect on the platform. This update will allow individuals to identify and add contacts using a unique username rather than requiring a mobile phone number, a departure from its original design principles.
The change, which is scheduled for a global rollout over the next few months, provides users with an additional layer of privacy. Previously, adding a contact necessitated knowing and inputting their phone number. The username system offers an alternative, enabling communication while keeping personal phone numbers private. This could prove particularly relevant for those who prefer not to disclose their contact details widely.
This move aligns WhatsApp more closely with the operational models of other prominent social media platforms and messaging applications, which predominantly use usernames for identification. The implementation is expected to provide greater flexibility and control over how user profiles are managed and shared within the application's extensive global user base.
