White House Removes 'Build The Wall' Game Following Tetris Copyright Infringement Claims
The White House website has removed its 'Build The Wall' game, a digital offering that drew criticism for its uncanny resemblance to the widely recognised Tetris game. The game’s disappearance follows a direct communication from The Tetris Company, which stated it takes “copyright infringement very seriously” and confirmed no involvement with the US government initiative.
The game, launched by the Biden administration, depicted players constructing a stylised border wall by arranging falling blocks, a clear appropriation of Tetris's core gameplay loop. This digital advocacy for the US-Mexico border barrier has now ceased, avoiding a potential legal confrontation over intellectual property.
The removal underscores the risks associated with government entities using popular cultural elements without proper licensing. The Tetris Company, a Dutch-owned entity, vigorously protects its intellectual property globally, particularly given the game's enduring popularity and numerous iterations since its Soviet origins.
