128 Migrants Cross English Channel in Single Small Boat, Setting New Record
A single small boat transported 128 migrants across the English Channel on Friday, establishing a new record for the number of people in one vessel. The crossing was part of a day that saw 225 individuals reach the UK in three separate boats.
This latest surge brings the total number of Channel arrivals for the year to 12,901, surpassing the 12,852 recorded in 2023. The significant increase underscores the ongoing challenges facing the UK Government's border policies and its stated objective of 'stopping the boats'.
The policy framework, which includes the contentious Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Act, aims to deter these crossings by sending asylum seekers to Rwanda. However, despite the legislation, the numbers continue to climb, suggesting a limited immediate impact on migration patterns. Critics frequently point to the immense human cost of these policies, highlighting the desperation driving individuals to undertake such perilous journeys and questioning the efficacy and ethics of externalising asylum processing.
