Rupert Lowe Dismisses Dunblane Massacre as 'One Murder', Criticises UK Handgun Ban
Rupert Lowe, a candidate for Reform UK in the Worcester constituency, has controversially characterised the 1996 Dunblane school massacre as merely 'one murder'. Speaking at a hustings, Mr Lowe questioned the UK's stringent handgun prohibition, stating it was enacted 'because there was a murder in Dunblane'.
The Dunblane tragedy saw Thomas Hamilton kill 16 primary school children and their teacher, Gwen Mayor, before taking his own life. The incident led directly to the UK's near-total ban on private handgun ownership, a legislative response widely supported across the political spectrum at the time.
Mr Lowe, a former chairman of Southampton Football Club and a previous MEP, made the remarks during a debate that included candidates from the Labour, Conservative, Green, and Liberal Democrat parties. His comments prompted immediate and widespread condemnation, with opponents and victim support groups expressing profound dismay at his reductive portrayal of such a devastating event and the subsequent legislative changes.
