East Belfast Bonfire Collapses, Killing Man Preparing Eleventh Night Structure
A man has died after falling from a bonfire in the Antiville Road area of east Belfast. The incident occurred on Saturday night as the individual was assisting with preparations for the Eleventh Night bonfire.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and the man was taken to hospital. Police subsequently confirmed his death, stating an investigation into the circumstances is underway. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been informed of the fatality.
These bonfires, constructed primarily from wooden pallets, are lit annually on 11 July as part of Ulster Protestant commemorations ahead of the 12 July parades. The structures often reach considerable heights, raising persistent concerns from safety bodies and local councils regarding the inherent risks.
Unionist politicians have offered condolences to the man's family, while bonfire organisers have described the event as a "tragic accident." The incident has once again highlighted the contentious nature of these towering pyres, which frequently draw criticism for their size, safety implications, and the burning of flags and effigies.
