Aberdeen Nursery Fined £80,000 After Ten-Month-Old Boy Suffers Bleach Burns

Little Scholars Day Nursery in Aberdeen has received a £80,000 fine after a ten-month-old boy suffered serious burns from a bucket of boiling water and bleach. The incident, which occurred in December 2021 at the nursery’s West End premises, left the infant needing skin grafts.

The nursery admitted to deficiencies in its health and safety protocols during the legal proceedings. The child was scalded on his left side, requiring medical intervention for the injuries sustained.

This penalty follows a previous enforcement action against the same nursery in 2020 by the Care Inspectorate, which identified similar safety failings. At that time, staff were reportedly leaving cleaning products accessible to children.

A spokesperson for the nursery stated they had “co-operated fully with all authorities” since the incident. They outlined that “significant changes” had been implemented across all their nurseries to enhance safety standards and ensure such an event could not recur. The spokesperson added that their “thoughts continue to be with the child and his family.”
