Aberdeen South and Arbroath and Broughty Ferry Constituencies Hold Westminster By-Elections
Polling stations opened at 07:00 and will close at 22:00 for the by-elections in Aberdeen South and Arbroath and Broughty Ferry. The vacancies arose after Stephen Flynn and Stephen Gethins, who secured these seats for the Scottish National Party (SNP) in the 2024 general election, subsequently resigned their Westminster mandates to take up positions in the Scottish Parliament.
In Aberdeen South, the SNP's rivals aim to overcome Flynn's previous majority of nearly 4,000 votes. Similarly, in Arbroath and Broughty Ferry, opposition parties are challenging Gethins' majority, which stood at approximately 900 votes.
These by-elections run concurrently with the Makerfield by-election in Greater Manchester, a contest that some observers suggest could have broader implications for the leadership of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Voters in all by-elections are required to present photo identification to cast their ballots.
Counting for the Scottish seats will proceed overnight, with the outcomes expected to be declared in the early hours of Friday morning.
