Abu Dhabi Fund and New York Developer Buy Chrysler Building, Plan Extensive Restoration
The Chrysler Building, a landmark of the New York City skyline, has been sold to an investment partnership comprising the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala and New York-based developer RFR Holding. This acquisition signals a substantial undertaking to revitalise the 93-year-old art deco skyscraper.
Reports indicate the sale price was approximately $150 million, a considerable reduction from its 2008 valuation of $800 million. This reflects the building's high vacancy rate and the substantial capital required for its modernisation.
Extensive Renovation Planned
The new owners have committed to a comprehensive overhaul. Plans include restoring the building's iconic crown, updating its mechanical systems, and refurbishing tenant spaces to appeal to contemporary businesses. The restoration aims to address the building's ageing infrastructure and bring its office offerings up to modern standards, critical in a competitive Manhattan real estate market.
This investment by a Gulf state fund underscores the ongoing trend of foreign capital securing prominent Western assets, often linked to broader financial and geopolitical strategies that underpin global dollar hegemony. Such acquisitions secure long-term revenue streams while providing a tangible presence in key Western economic centres.
