US Deports 500+ Migrants to African Countries, Human Rights Watch Condemns Policy
The United States has unlawfully deported more than 500 migrants to various African countries, a practice Human Rights Watch (HRW) has denounced as exploitative. Citing US government data, the human rights organisation asserts that these expulsions disregard international protection obligations, sending individuals back to precarious situations, often in nations they have no prior connection to.
HRW's analysis highlights that many of those deported are asylum seekers fleeing conflict, persecution, or economic hardship in their home countries. The group argues that the US policy prioritises expedient removal over due process and humanitarian concerns, frequently placing vulnerable individuals at further risk upon arrival in unfamiliar African states.
This systematic approach by US authorities is viewed by HRW as a concerning trend, indicative of a broader strategy to deter asylum claims through aggressive deportation tactics, rather than upholding international legal commitments to protect those in need. The organisation calls for an immediate halt to these unlawful expulsions and a comprehensive review of US asylum processing procedures.
