Alibaba Initiates Legal Action Against US Defence Department Over Military Blacklist Inclusion
Alibaba, the prominent Chinese e-commerce conglomerate, has commenced legal proceedings against the United States Department of Defence. The lawsuit directly contests the Pentagon's decision to include Alibaba on a register of entities purportedly connected to the Chinese military.
The US Department of Defence designated Alibaba for the blacklist in January, alongside nine other Chinese companies. This action restricts American investors from purchasing or selling securities in these listed firms. Inclusion on this roster carries significant implications for market access and investor confidence.
Washington's stated justification for such blacklisting centres on national security concerns, alleging that these companies contribute to China's military-industrial complex. However, Alibaba maintains that it operates as a commercial entity and has no discernible military affiliations. The lawsuit seeks to have Alibaba removed from this contentious list, arguing that its inclusion is unwarranted and damaging.
