Andy Burnham Cancels Radio Manchester Slot Amid Labour Leadership Challenge Speculation
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham withdrew from his regular 'Hotseat' phone-in on Radio Manchester, with a spokesperson stating he needed to 'prioritise discussions arising from last week's elections'. The cancellation has intensified long-standing rumours that Burnham is preparing to return to Westminster and challenge for the Labour leadership.
Sir Keir Starmer's position as Labour leader is precarious, with four ministers having resigned and dozens of MPs urging his departure in the aftermath of heavy losses in recent local elections. Burnham would be required to secure a parliamentary seat before any leadership challenge could be launched.
However, two local MPs, Afzal Khan of Rusholme and Geoff Smith of Withington, have denied reports they would step aside to trigger by-elections to facilitate Burnham's return to the Commons. Both stated these claims were unfounded.
Starmer, addressing his party on Wednesday, cautioned against the 'chaos' a leadership contest would unleash, amidst suggestions that Health Secretary Wes Streeting is poised to launch an imminent challenge. Meanwhile, Angela Rayner, the former deputy prime minister and another figure seen as a potential contender, confirmed HMRC had cleared her over her tax affairs. Rayner has publicly dismissed the notion of any pact with Burnham to challenge for the leadership, stating, 'I'm not doing deals or anything like that.'
Sources close to Streeting have indicated a leadership challenge could materialise as early as today. Burnham also cancelled a speaking engagement the day after last week's local council elections, further fuelling speculation regarding his intentions.
