Andy Burnham Eyes Labour Leadership Again After Returning to Westminster

Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, is reportedly positioning himself for a renewed challenge for the leadership of the Labour Party. This comes as Mr Burnham prepares to return to Westminster, signalling a potential third attempt to lead the opposition party. His political journey has seen him serve as a Member of Parliament for Leigh since 2001, holding significant government portfolios, including Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, and Secretary of State for Health.

Mr Burnham's prior bids for the Labour leadership occurred in 2010 and 2015. The 2010 contest saw him finish fourth, while in 2015, he was ultimately defeated by Jeremy Corbyn. Following his 2015 loss, he successfully campaigned to become the first Mayor of Greater Manchester in 2017, securing re-election in 2021.

His tenure as mayor, a position he is now vacating, focused on regional development and devolution. His return to national politics is seen as a strategic move to re-engage with the party's Westminster machinery and build support for another leadership campaign.
