Bank of England Holds Interest Rates at 5.25% Amid Persistent Inflation Outlook
The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of England has voted to keep the UK's base interest rate at 5.25%. This marks the second consecutive meeting where rates have been held, following fourteen consecutive increases initiated in December 2021.
While the decision to hold was broadly expected by the City, the economic outlook suggests further challenges. Current forecasts indicate that inflation, which stood at 6.7% in September, is likely to remain elevated. The Bank of England now projects inflation will not return to its 2% target until late 2025.
Some financial institutions, including Investec, have revised their predictions, suggesting a potential rate increase to 5.5% before the end of 2024. The Bank of England's own updated economic forecasts are scheduled for release later in November, which will provide further clarity on its immediate strategy for managing inflation.
